- Abstract : Edible bananas originated in Southeast Asia from one or both of the two wild Musa species, M. acuminate (AA, 2n=22) and M. balbisiana (88, 2n=22.). Both species and four subspecies of the former are widely distributed in Thailand. The present paper deals with the exploration, collection, conservation and characterization of banana genetic resources in Thailand. A total of 323 accessions were collected during the period 197981, using IBPGR funding. All have been conserved in the Field Genebank at Kasetsart University Pak Chong Student Training Farm, Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima. Characterization was accomplished, based on Simmonds and Shepherd's scoring method of 15 characters, cytotaxomy, and IBPGR's minimum list of descriptors. Seven genomic groups are recognized, viz. AA, AAA, AAB, AU, ABBE, BB, and BBB.
