  • Abstract : The histopathology of Radopholus similis and Helicotylenchus multicinctus in roots of Musa spp. in the absence of other micro-organisms, is described. Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia sp., two fungi commonly isolated from lesions in the cortex of banana roots with which R. similis is associated, proved to be non-pathogenic. The interaction of F. oxysporum and R. similis in the formation of lesions is described and it is concluded that R. similis is the primary pathogen of root rot and may create in the cortex a food base for weak, unspecialised fungal parasites and thereby increase the invasive potential of these fungi.
